Winemaker Eulogio Pomares

With a twinkle in his eye and a soft hum to his voice, Lorenzo Gómez looks proudly at his cousin’s son, Eulogio Pomares, Locho as he adoringly calls him, and gushes in admiration for what has has become of his spectacular 40+ year old “Francón” vineyard, under Locho’s care and meticulous attention.

It was just before the first 2018 Pedraneira harvest that famed Albariño whisperer, Eulogio “Locho” Pomares, convinced his dear cousin Lorenzo to let Francón’s singular vineyard tucked away on a waterfront plot an islet in the Castreló district of Rías Baixas become his muse. You see until then, Lorenzo’s 2.5 ha plot had been under contract with a neighboring winery, Pazo Señorans, and blended into some of their most spectacular productions of Selección de Añada. But Lorenzo knew this vineyard was special and Eulogio finally made him an offer he couldn’t refuse - so with the fruits of one and the labor of the other, these cousins produce this vintage driven, coastal influenced, single vineyard Pedraneira Albariño.

The air is bright with light and the wind rustles gently here, there is a peaceful calm to the quiet.

VAL DO SALNÉS | RÍAS BAIXAS VINTAGE REPORTS

2021–2025

  • 2021 Vintage: A cooler, less sunny summer slowed ripening following an early start to the growing season. Favorable September conditions allowed for a healthy, abundant harvest, producing Albariños with moderate alcohol, vibrant acidity, freshness and excellent structure. Val do Salnés harvested approximately 29.7 million kg.

  • 2022 Vintage: A warm, dry growing season with limited disease pressure encouraged healthy fruit and excellent ripeness. Despite lower production than the previous year, the harvest delivered generous, aromatic wines with ripe orchard fruit, greater concentration, well-integrated acidity and good aging potential. Val do Salnés harvested approximately 26 million kg.

  • 2023 Vintage: A wet winter and warm spring encouraged early growth, although May rainfall brought increased mildew pressure. Drier, warmer conditions later in the season supported an exceptionally abundant harvest, producing expressive Albariños with ripe fruit, good aromatic intensity and balanced Atlantic freshness. Val do Salnés harvested approximately 30.5 million kg.

  • 2024 Vintage: A warm, exceptionally wet spring and humid early summer created significant mildew pressure and uneven fruit set, reducing yields. However, favorable August weather and an excellent early September harvest window produced healthy, concentrated grapes with vibrant acidity, aromatic complexity and exceptional aging potential. Val do Salnés harvested approximately 27.4 million kg, and Rías Baixas received an official Excellent vintage classification.

  • 2025 Vintage: A warm, wet winter and spring were followed by an exceptionally hot, dry June that accelerated vine development. Despite occasional September rainfall, favorable growing conditions and limited crop losses delivered a historically abundant harvest of healthy, well-ripened fruit, with promising aromatic intensity, freshness and balance. Val do Salnés harvested approximately 30.9 million kg.
